It occurs to me that the ever-evolving nature of language, that the final result will be a language capable of expressing abstract concepts fully and clearly with a minimal set of syllables and cultural norms to dance around.

I can already see it happening. Perhaps I'm lazy, but anytime one tries to replace an older one- or two-syllabic term with something hyphenated and paragraphic in length, I refuse to use the new one. Wanna attract users of your new vocabulary? Make it simple and easier to use! I do not say "African-American," I say "Black." I have no offense meant, but don't think the distinction is worth being angry over, particularly not worth being angry over a few syllables. Another example: "vertically challenged." It's "short." Get over it.

In fact, though, this need for efficiency (again, if only to shorten conversations, enhance understanding so more time can be spent working, and because the speakers are lazy as hell) is part of a greater trend in language. Let me illustrate:

To express this concept, we have had:

The Bible needed the entire Song of Solomon as well as prohibitions sprinkled throughout.

John Donne wrote a long-ass poem (sonnet?) using the analogy of the flea.

The Beach Boys expressed it as "Picking up good vibrations."

Today, we merely call it "Head."

And it is glorious. In all its monosyllabic glory, it is now Head, and we love it so.

Yes, sometimes I get drunk, and when I get drunk, I tend to think a lot about useless shit. You have all been a victim of my mindless drunken thoughts. I would apologize... but I just don't feel sorry.

lol u r fag nd u ned die now kthx.

But seriously, I know what you mean there, it makes sense.. Another thing: Is it just me or do only Americans and English speaking people do this with their languages?

Good job doing some in-depth research. Sad part is, most fags will not even remotely understand what you're talking about

what part of that was in-depth research?

I saw no scientific study, no sources quoted. In fact i believe that this whole discussion was spawned by what the author called "My random thought.

I'm glad that someone as cultured as you knows what "most dem faggots gun understand".

in my experience, articulating introspective tangential thought while drunk is pretty much a fail. you should write about this while tripping. that'd be saucy.
