what do you guys think of joining the army? how is boot camp, what kinda benefits and money do you get out of it

is it fun or hell? im considering to join the army, and dont give me the "ill become a sheep" bullshit, just tell me your experinces with the army or marines

well your prolly going to go to iraq or afgahn in the army and the marines is def iraq and bootcamps are fucking easy just do it .. and do as your told right when your told... it will go by and you will be done with it.. for the marines tho at the end of the boot camp you must do the crucible its a 48 hrs thing with like no sleep etc blah blah

My sisters boyfriend got back from boot camp about 2 weeks ago. He wasn't in that great of shape so he had to do an extra month of exercising. Basically he said boot camp sucked the entire time but overall it was worth it. Never volunteer for anything ever. You don't want them to learn your name. If you want a good look at the military life or have questions you can try reading this thread.

do i need a high school diploma or can i get it while im there
Jedi Pimp;569297']Go Marines. Army will fucking take anybody. Army is more of a meat grinder for combat troops. Marines usually go in and clean up the shit the Army left or couldn't deal with.

BTW - I am biased cause my grandfather was a Marine. He served both WWII (Pacific) and then again in Korea (Chosin Frozen).

Quoted for wise words.

Marines have their purpose in the military , however if you want to be a brainwashed cannon fodder drone ... steer clean of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.

I too am a bit prejudice since I retired from the Army back in 2001. Army basic training is rather simple . You deal with the typical mind games , PT and indoctrinations . You have to be pretty pathetic to struggle getting thru Army basic.

When I enlisted , you needed a HS Diploma or a GED. However with the current recruiting slump I believe HS Diploma can be waived and achieved while on Active service. The Asvab test is ridiculously easy. The higher you score on the ASVAB the more MOS enlistment options are available to you .

For example .... way back in 1978 I scored somewhere around 250 on the Asvab and was given pretty much carte blanc on the Army MOS List . I chose Military Intelligence Field. 98GCM (chinese linguist) After basic I went to DLI in Monterey Calif. for 47 weeks of language training , then 6 wks of Intel training and an additional 6 weeks of advanced intel training . Then off to US Army FS Kunia in Hawaii for the remainder of my 4 yr enlistment. (where I spent 1 1/2 yrs as full time student at UH Manoa at the governments expense while on active duty and by the end of my career had obtained a MA degree while on Active service)

After my first 4 yrs however I changed MOS to 97B and I spent the next 4 reenlistments with the XVIII AB corp , 82nd AB and 75th Ranger Reg.

So steer clear of Combat related MOS , you have a better chance of your first enlistment being tolerable rather than horrible.

If you want to join the Air Force/Farce , You will be required to recognize and distinguish between a Dinner fork and a Salad fork .

If you want to join the Navy you will be required to provide your own Vaseline or KY jelly.

Just watched Shooter, it was awesome.

AMAZING MOVIE RIGHT? It's one of my favorites.

so marines or army, and i want to go to hawaii too and go to college there too wtf

Once again a thread full of civvie opinions on the military.

As to your question regarding a diploma to join the Marines (always capitalized). You can join with a GED, but it is harder and will require your recruiter to go through a lot of extra work. He/She will probably send you to to a High School Diploma program to get one before joining.

The Marines will help pay for college thanks to the GI Bill (which is just now getting upgraded to help us out even more). The military is all about helping you further your education. There is always someone willing to work with you to help you along that path.

As for which service to join, it is all down to what you want to do. Keep in mind that if you are going active duty, then the Marines cannot guarantee you a specific MOS, only a career field. For instance, you can get guaranteed an 03 (infantry) career field, but you can't get guaranteed a specific MOS within that field, such as machine gunner, rifleman, assaultman, ect. You will get to put down what you want on a wish-list, and when in School of Infantry they will ask who wants to try for which position.

How is Boot Camp? It's not as bad as people say. This is because most of those people talking are civvies. Sure parts of it suck, that's life. But it really isn't that bad. During DEP (Delayed Entry Program - the time from when you sign and swear in at MEPS to your ship date.) you will work out with your recruiter and the rest of the poolees at least once a week, and do some other cool activities too. So as long as you participate and put out while working out you should be in decent shape for it. They will also go over a lot of what Boot Camp will be like. You can ask your recruiter if he has a copy of Ears Open Eyeballs Click (or watch the clips on youtube). It is a documentary following a platoon through USMC RD SD.

As for Hawaii, I don't think there are any Army guys there. Only Marines (K-Bay).

If you have any specific questions shoot me a PM. (About USMC, but I can answer some general questions about Army or send them to some Army buddies to get them answered.)

Either way, thank you for signing up in a time when you don't have to. Good luck in what ever service you decide to join.

i want to join the marines, if you gonne go to war, might as well be with the best, I also need the money, so if i sign up, will they send me to high school program first, or do i have to go to get my diploma first and then sign up?

It is technically possible to join with a GED. But if your recruiter suggests you get a diploma, then you would need to get one before you sign up. When me and my buddy joined he only had a GED. So the recruiter had him go to some HS Diploma program thing. He just took in his HS transcript, then they tell you what classes you need to do to graduate. Then he had to go in once a week, and they gave him packets to fill out while at home. Once you get your packets done and take the HS Exit Exam, then you will be given a HS Diploma. Then you can go to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) at about 5am and take your physical, fill out a shit load of paper work, wait around a lot, and sign your contract and swear in.

Then you will have your ship date to Boot Camp. (Paris Island, SC if you are East of the Mississippi, or San Diego if you live west of the Mississippi.) From this point to your ship date you are in the DEP. You will meet with your recruiter and the other poolees once a week to do shit/PT.

WRONG

25th Infantry Division @ Schofield Barracks has been in Hawaii since 1941 .

500th Military Intelligence Brigade

Army Pacific Command @ Ft Shafter

Tripler Army Medical Center

and numerous smaller Army units stationed in Hawaii .

Which is why I used the word "think".

lol @ all capital letters.

the crucible wasn't all that bad mostly because you are in good shape and that grim reaper at the end is easy even with very little sleep.

honestly from my experience in the marines the air force bases were by far the best ones i have ever been. overseas especially i mean ridiculous compared to the marine/navy bases i was at. still it's pretty easy to get pussy with your dress blues and even if you get a non-infantry job you can shoot a lot of fun stuff at MCT. in boot camp just be sure never to finish first or last at any task. the longer the drill instructors don't know your name the better off you will be. some of the funniest shit i have ever seen happened in boot camp too.

fuck navy seals, go SAS. Oh wait you can`t, have to stick with the shittier ones then.

Kids debating Special Operations Forces always cracks me up.

Two different units with two very different jobs.

You might as well compare rocks with paper plates. In short - don't talk about things you don't know, you will only make yourself look worse. (If that is possible after that comment you just made...)

lmfao

EDIT : ZuZu- As I said earlier, if you need any other questions answered send me a PM. (I feel this thread is already on it's way out.) I am friends with the SSgt that recruited me, and he is still on recruiting duty here in SD. Anything I cannot answer I can have him answer and get back to you.

Marine Corps boot camp is easy, most Marines will tell you the first 2 weeks is hardest because of the transition from civilian to military life. After that it's just downhill. As long as you don't piss off or impress your DIs you won't have too many problems with them.

Don't join the Marines if you're looking solely for money and benefits, don't walk into a recruiting office expecting any signing bonuses.

Recruiters are only allowed 2 recruits a year with GEDs (I think). On top of that you need a 50 on the ASVAB.
