Reputation is a system that Turtle Rock have incorporated into Left 4 Dead to help prevent certain people from ruining the games for others and to allow people of the same general skill level to play with each other. Basically, almost everything you do in-game apart from walking will show up on your permanent record as a merit or a demerit. This system differs between the Infected players and the Survivor players. Demerits/Faults - Friendly Fire. - Blowing up the Boomer near teammates/yourself. - Having a medkit, but forgetting to use it ('Forgetful'). Demerits/Faults - Mistakes, stupidity, bad things. Generally anything that can be counted as bad is stuck here. Do not hurt your mates. It'll be fun in the beginning, but very quickly the only people you'll be left to play with are other ragers. EDIT: I left some demerits in there by accident, I meant to delete em after I read em. Of course they won't be able to track all the shit that's listed, they're just trying to scare people.
