Posted November 16, 200816 yr So i've been thinking for a long time about learning drums. Are there any drummers here who could offer advice on a decent starter kit? Naturally any other advice involving learning drums would be nice too.
November 16, 200816 yr Author Cadaver;594925']wow i'm sure there are plenty of forums dedicated to this sort of thing There are also quite a few musicians here I believe, so I thought why not? You didn't post a comment like that in a thread dedicated to a guitar string.

Fine, be useless, it was a simple question since if I posted a thread on guitars i'm sure i'd get a lot more use out of it.
November 16, 200816 yr Author a rage/gaming forum == drumming General Forum (5 Viewing) Post or talk about anything here.
November 16, 200816 yr I have been playing drums for about 11 years now and i would suggest you don't go out and just a buy a drumset. Take some lessons you don't need to have your own set for that and you can see how it is before you spend the $1000+ on a decent setup.

November 16, 200816 yr musician forums are not where you would want to start reading or looking up stuff. you wanna kinda hang out where your teacher teaches at if its a music place. alof of people on those music forums are stuck up cunts. i have been playing for 8 years. played guitar since i was in kindergarden and now im 20. the biggest thing is just to have fun with it. make sure you learn how to read music first along with the different notes and what not, not just the drum music. I have been teaching for the last 3-4 years as well for drums. I would say take a few lessons and see how you like it and if you decide on taking it up look for a used kit in the news paper but look for a name brand like ludwig or slingerland or tama etc etc. older kits people usually get rid of for a couple hundred bucks and will last you a long time. I started out with a slingerland kit from the 60's and it was only like 300 bucks 9 years ago. But once you decide that you like it and after you get a kit take some theory classes and it will help you a ton. I studied music in college for 3 years as well as middle school through high school and at berklee college of music during highschool. there are plenty of opportunities to learn and have fun and even make some money doing it. 1. get lessons 2. see if you like it, get a kit 3. take some theory classes 4. look for places to study * berklee in boston is great, you have actual famous people teaching you. people that have been in the business and know how it work and are great at drumming.* ie mike portnoy, mike mangini, tony royster jr, john blackwell. etc etc 5. have fun 7. profit
November 17, 200816 yr So i've been thinking for a long time about learning drums. Are there any drummers here who could offer advice on a decent starter kit? Naturally any other advice involving learning drums would be nice too. yeah just by a cheap sonar kit, or something along the lines of a yamaha.. and yea i guess i could try to give you some advice.. i've been sitting behind a drum set ever since i was born pretty much since my dad plays and like i've been seriously playing for almost 14 years the only advice i can really give you is just to practise your syncopation and rudiments and buy a few books based on that particularly. you can even start right now just go out and buy some books and a pair of drumsticks and practice on a phone book or something EDIT : oh yea, dont forget to count ; )
November 17, 200816 yr yeah just by a cheap sonar kit, or something along the lines of a yamaha.. Bad idea don't waste your moeny on a bad set that you will have to replace in 6 months to a year down the road. Play drums for about 6-8 months then invest in a decent kit. I am not saying drop $5000.00 on a set but to me it seems pointless to buy something your going to grow out of in a short period of time. thats my http://www.guitar.com/uploaded/profile_images/forum_2f455681_two_cents_small.jpg

November 18, 200816 yr So i've been thinking for a long time about learning drums. Are there any drummers here who could offer advice on a decent starter kit? Naturally any other advice involving learning drums would be nice too. I don't know if there is one available to you, but you could join a marching band. Then you could get plenty of practice with drums.
