Posted January 24, 200916 yr recently my car has been making worse and worse sounds everyday when i start it up for about 5minutes. also accelerating 0-30kmh produces some grinding (but not the metal on metal type of gring) noises, sometimes also when turning corners (probably related to drive belt/fluid) anyways last 2 days were the worst, and today after driving back from snowboarding i look down to see the check engine symbol on and the acceleration rapidly dipping (gotta max out to go 120kmh) but the rpm never differed from the usual. now i start it up and its a horrible noise. obviously all of this is coming from the serpentine belt area. my question is simply this: could all of these problems (including the engine light check coming on) all be caused of a worn out serpentine belt? or would it have to be more? i really hope so since i can replace it myself, but if its worse like pullys misaligned or a/c or calibrator ... fuck ill need to get a mechanic.
January 24, 200916 yr If your serpentine belt is worn out it will have alot of cracks in it. The grinding could be a wheel bearing or cv joint. Usually a constant grinding is a bad wheel bearing. I dunno your description sucks. Could be a bad pulley as well. First off, what car is it? Auto, manual, engine, miles etc etc I'm a mechanic btw Edited January 24, 200916 yr by [myg0t]Opter
January 24, 200916 yr Author i havent taking a close look at the belt because its damn cold/nighttime out its a 00' mazda protege se automatic 160, 000 kmh its also really cold here it seems the grinding sounds like the pulleys themselves, altho im sure their not touching anything they shouldn't be. its just a grinding like noise. ive got a feeling its the belt / maybe a fucked up pulley or bearing like you said could just the worn out belt cause these problems?
January 24, 200916 yr A visual inspection will tell you if the belt is in need of replacement. If the grinding is there when the car is not moving, and sounds like its from around there, I would check the pulleys. Easy way would be to pull of the belt and spin them and look for any play or weird sounds, engine off of course. You should go get that code scanned at a place like Advance Auto parts or Autozone for free.
January 24, 200916 yr Author alright thanks dude. tomorrow im gonna take off the belt and turn the car on real quick (still) and see if the same noises continue. might just bring it in to be safe after all tho
January 24, 200916 yr No not at all...when you're engine makes noises thats just a sign of a well tuned machine. Screetching and smoke will probably come next...in that event turn your head at the stop light, look at those honeys in the next car over and smile. Cuz they're gonna cream their panties at how amazing you look in your fine tuned car. Way to go stud, way to go.
January 24, 200916 yr alright thanks dude. tomorrow im gonna take off the belt and turn the car on real quick (still) and see if the same noises continue. might just bring it in to be safe after all tho Running the engine without the belt on will not help you find your grinding sound if you are suspecting it from the pulley system (needs the belt to turn them duh). You can run it for a little bit to listen if the engine itself is making that noise on startup. You will need to leave the engine off and spin the pulleys and check for looseness, grinding, or unusual sounds.
January 24, 200916 yr That sucks man. When your driving does the the engine temp get higher? Do you lose oil pressure? Grinding noises usually are due to a lack of proper lubrication. You can definitely visually inspect the belts on your engine, however I do not recommend taking them off...it is a royal pain in the ass to put them back on.

Don't do anything this kid says.
January 24, 200916 yr It's only a pain in the ass to change belts if the technology used in a wrench tends to confuse you.

January 24, 200916 yr it could be your transmission But yeah, it could be a wheel bearing too. Listen when it happens, if you can distinctly hear which wheel it's coming from then it's def a wheelbearing

January 25, 200916 yr Is the noise causing vibration? if so most likely its your motor mounts, I had a problem with like this recently
January 25, 200916 yr The rest of you that posted are idiots for coming to rash conclusions without proper diagnosis. I also agree 100% with knobjockey's latest post.
