Also - I agree that stuff was OK back in high school, for a while I had long hair as a kid too. That's why I said you could get away with it a lot better back then. I don't know how well it would work around here now, unless you are going for the beach bum / surfer chick. I don't think I'll ever let my hair grow any longer than it is now. Short hair is just so much less maintenance.
