Couple of things to know before you make any suggestions, the components I chose are there for a reason and not simply to have them, so they all play a role in the plans I have for the PC. So, while comments about not needing X or X don't apply, feel free to suggest better alternatives.

The majority of these I am getting from Newegg, I will list the product description and price (rounded up):

  • $289.00 - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920 - Retail

  • $300.00 - EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

  • $200.00 - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1600C8D - Retail

  • $215.00 - Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail

  • $265.00 - OCZ Solid Series OCZSSD2-1SLD120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II Solid State Disk (SSD) - Retail

  • $20.00 - ICY DOCK MB882SP-1S-1B 2.5" to 3.5" SSD & SATA Hard Drive Converter - Black - Retail

  • $230.00 - Antec TPQ-850 850W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Retail

  • $380.00 - XFX GX285NZDFF GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

  • $135.00 - LG Black Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner SATA Model GGC-H20L - Retail

  • $23.00 - LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS30 - OEM

Approx. $2,057.00 + Shipping & Receiving

basically if you're looking for cheap and effective improvements i would suggest upgrading your central processing unit, or cpu. for further instruction, please contact your local triple A group and they will come change your tires.

sheba bless

The solid state drive seems awfully expensive for so little storage. I'd hold off on that until they are more commercially available and affordable.

Solid State Drives right now aren't as much about size as it is performance, look around a bit and you will see plenty of what I'm talking about. For an example, a PC I built for a co-worker running XP Media Center fully boots into the Desktop in 10 seconds from button press which is actually slow for many SSD. However, compared to even just last year, the storage size versus price on these drives has DRASTICALLY improved. There are many SSD's of 60Gb capacity for around $150 which was unheard of last year.

1TB on traditional hard disk is $87.99 right now on Newegg, I will probably add one of these later on for MP3/Movie storage.

I'm talking to a guy at my work right now who bought the same CPU, he says hes got his OC'd to 3.8Ghz, I will try this later after I buy new heatsink.

if you do OC i'd recommend a TRUE or Noctua for your cpu, I have a Noctua and it's really quiet.

ps. the i7's get really hot compared to other cpu's but you can shave like 10c from disabling "Hyper Threading" in the bios, who wants to do that anyway. =/

ive seen from benchmarks they run a little hotter but thats nothing you cant fix with a proper heatsink and plenty of thermal paste.

Disabling HT on an i7 defeats the point of having an i7. Then all you'll have is a very expensive quad core. If temp is a problem then get better cooling.

Anyway, SX I notice you're buying an SSD but if it were me I'd just buy a small one like 20-30 gig maybe up to 60 gig depending on price and I would use it for the OS and programs. I think that would last reasonably long without costing terribly much. And I agree with buying a good cheap 1TB drive for your porn obsession because you will wear out your SSD in a week if you tried to use that.

sp0rk, SSD's already outlast regular hard drives as they have no moving parts, require very little power and produce almost no heat compared to regular platter drives.

Although SSD generally have much slower write speeds than regular HDD's, the read speed on the slowest SSD is 2X faster, among many other advantages. Take a look at the below video posted last year on Vista:

I plan to have my OS and games on the SSD and less time-critical media on the traditional drive.

everything looks good. this thing should be incredibly fast. i would just throw a 1tb drive in there, they aren't much as you said above.

i wish i went with your motherboard or even the Asus boards, i have the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, it's still a nice board tho.

How much OC'ing are you planning to do on your CPU?

Usually I enjoy trolling threads like this, but...

I'm jealous of the SSD. I think 128GB is the perfect size. That is good enough to hold your OS and any games along with it. Then you use another cheap SATA drive to hold music, movies, etc. since that shit doesn't need good performance. Sweet machine, nice ricer case.

Fuck the SSD. Get two VelociRaptors on RAID 0. It's 350 but...whatever.
So I need to know...is getting a quadcore really that much faster...2.67 * 4 CPU's? From what I read, most programs aren't even able to take full advantage of that...so if I'm gonna build a new computer I"ll just get a single core processor with high speed just to be sure.

Yea and SX is right too that modern SSD drives really are better than current hdd's. The problem of failure due to disk writes has largely been solved enough that any modern ssd should beat hdd's in every way except cost.

I doubt it'll be obsolete any time soon but yeah, w/e...ALan Wake hasn't even come out yet...what other games are using quad-core processors. Any game will be backwards compatible with single-cores anyways...that's just practical business sense.

Clearly you cannot spark a war with is already won...
