January 29, 201114 yr Interesting read indeed. If those numbers/facts are correct then I am surprised at the level of efficiency in which the government was able to shut off communication. Renesys observed the virtually simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet's global routing table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving no valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with Egypt's service providers. http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/8/2011/01/500x_all_outages_zoom2.jpg It is really quite impressive that it was done in such a short time span. As far as it happening in the US I agree with Stamos. The US government might be able to stop the major ISP's from allowing connectivity with enemy countries in a time of war, or maybe even shutting down completely, but "It's unlikely that the government would be able to force every small ISP and college to stop their peering, and corporations and other customers with multiple ISPs would still have connectivity." I guess all we can do now is sit back and watch what repercussions might occur from this; and see how long and to what degree the Egyptian government is able to maintain this decision.
