1. They have an 'intercepted' email detailing the socialing of a Valve employee on their website.

2. One of their members (t0y) is credited if not with actually breaking this source code released story, with at least being the prime propagator of it.

Of course, this could all be a big joke, and a good one at that. If not, however...

If the email is authentic, and the files that t0y claims are the source are authentic, then you end up with the following scenario:

Being the first to post the 'intercepted' email was not a brilliant move, as it can be used as evidence in an investigation into the leak of the source code. More on that in a minute. At the least we can speculate that myg0t members know how the email was intercepted. Since it's an internal email, it's evidence of intrusion.

I bet not all 66 members of myg0t live in the same state as Valve (though looking at their whois data I'd bet at least the 'leader' is american), so that will spur a federal investigation. Realistically, the FBI is not going to chase down some kids for stealing an internal email - that kind of thing happens every day. The source code, however, is a completely different story.

Kevin Mitnick stole source code from Sun Microsystems several years ago -- code he never gave to anyone, much less flung to the far reaches of the internet -- and he got 2 years in lockup *before* his trial, with a few more after his conviction. Of course, Mitnick was convicted before the FBI started getting really upset about computer crime.

So anyway, back to the code. I'm no investigator, but every site I've seen that mentions the code points to the images on t0y's site. Take that, and add to it the anti-Valve rhetoric myg0t spews all over their site, and imagine what conclusions an FBI investigator might draw from that. Would a group like myg0t -- one who claims to exist for the sole purpose of ruining other people's good time and generally causing trouble in *this specific* gaming community -- assist in stealing the source to aid cheating for HL2 and its mods? I have no idea, but I'd guess the feds will want to find out.

Since the passing of the USA Patriot Act, computer intrusion crimes falling under federal jurisdiction carry a sentence of 20 years. Things promise to get uncomfortable for anyone in myg0t who knows anything about how the code got out. Sentencing tends to be passed with an eye toward the value of what was lost; in this case six years of work and several million dollars on Valve's part. I wouldn't expect much leniency for anyone convicted -- not even for the people who just consipired to steal the code but didn't actually break into any servers.

myg0t claims 66 members. That's a lot of people to question. That's too many to expect every one to keep their mouths shut if something illegal was going on. I really hope the source is fake, for their sakes; 20 years in federal prison is a high price to pay just to cheat a few people out of a good game of CS

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

Looks to me like the g0ts achieved at least one group goal..."the most pheared raging crew in CS" was one of the claims to fame at one point...

What I'm finding totally hilarious about this is the number of people who seem to be under the impression that possessing a copy of leaked code is in some way illegal. Seems to me that though the code itself was stolen, which involved violations of federal hacking laws, fraud, and so on, that the individual or individuals who actually DID it have reason to be nervous about reprecussions IF they happened to fail to cover their tracks well enough to avoid successful backtracing. HOWEVER that is a BIG "if", and since the code is not, as yet, copyrighted by any legal process, redistribution cannot be illegal, nor can possession of copies of said code...as a matter of fact, since these leaks have occurred over the internet, which is to say, through satellight traffic, the freedom of information act means that possession is completely protected...moreso if it has at any point been redistributed from a machine originating in any country that fails to recognize US intellectual property laws (copyright and patent)...meaning that even if they copyright it NOW in an attempt to prevent further distribution, it's beyond their control in legal terms.

Basically, all you folks bitching, whining, or looking forward to myg0t being "busted" for what they obviously did are missing a number of very basic concepts, to whit:

A. they'd have to prove that myg0t, as an organization, supported and performed the illegal actions that obtained the code--this is highly doubtful...do you really think outkast is CAPABLE of such a move, even if he wanted to? (sorry 'kast, I likes you, but you're the first name that came to mind as someone who couldn't have managed this); The truth is an individual or small group managed this hack, and IF they are backtracked, THEY are the ones the law can hold responsible, not the group. myg0t, as a group, is safe here.

B. a decent hacker covers tracks well. IF they can manage to get the backtracking done, do you REALLY believe the guy who captured the files was dumb enough NOT to have a compromized computer he worked through in a country like Korea, UAE, or Turkey, who will refuse to release any further info to the folks in the US, thus stopping the backtracking? Personally, I ALWAYS make a hop through one unfriendly country or another during a serious hack, just in case I do fuck up and miss erasing SOME bit of evidence or another. I believe the more talented g0ts around here habitually do the same, so even if guilty, catching the party(parties) involved is going to be next to impossible.

C. IF (huge if here) the material so far coded was copyrighted already...highly improbable, as uncompleted projects usually cannot be copyrighted, and the end software idea, which CAN be copyrighted against competative production, is impossible to arrive at from what code WAS stolen, makes it next to impossible for intellectual property laws in the US to apply. This means that it is highly probable that the code IS eligible for legal redistribution, and all threats by Valve outside of "if we know you got the code, we'll prevent you from using Steam" are likely to be unable to be enforced by law in any form...and even prevention from accessing Steam will be difficult to enforce to the point of impossibility. MAYBE Valve could withdraw support to sites known to be redistributing the code...but punitive action on their part would be limited to seeking redress through US federal courts against the hosting companies of such sites for redistributing something they feel is their intellectual property...again, FIRST, the courts would have to rule on whether intellectual property laws apply here BEFORE allowing the case to be schedueled...then there's an average of a 3 to 5 year wait before the case would see a courtroom....IF the court determined intellectual property law applied, they could then be petitioned to place an injunction stopping redistribution of this code from US sites until the case was finished...but that injunction would have to NAME THE SITES INVOLVED, and wouldn't have any effect on sites based outside the US.

Translation...any individual who has the code, any site that is redistributing it, so on, and so forth, with the exception of the person or people who ORIGINALLY hacked it away from them is untouchable by US law with the exception of POSSIBLY being subject to an injunction against redistributing it AFTER Valve gets federal courts to rule on whether or not copyright applies...and possibly, 3 to 5 years out, being subject to lawsuit IF a court not only finds copyright to be applicable (unlikely), but can ALSO prove damages that THAT redistributor is responsible for...when it will be quite clear by that time that any individual who wished to could access the information from a site that is untouchable by US courts....which effectively absolves US redistributers outside of the original hacker(s)/leaker(s) of any responsibility for damages, if used as a defense. (defense boils down to "prove the damage came from them getting code from ME...they COULD have gone to http://www.hl2code-here.de and got it just as easily, besides, the reedom of information act states all US citizens have a right to access to that information, since it was transmitted in the clear over public airwaves, yadda-yadda.")

The only thing that they would want from myg0t about us being first to post the allegedly intercepted email is to know from whom it came. Scary. You cannot connect myg0t to an intrustion without reasonable doubt based solely on us posting an email which may or may not have been intercepted. In either case, myg0t is a third party which had nothing to do with the theoretical hijacking of this email.

Nobody will launch a federal investigation just because we posted an email and released news. Might as well hunt down the President of CNN while you're at it.

myg0t has never stolen code. Do you have proof we have done so? No? Then don't try to ruin our name. The rest of your post is just you trying to use some sort of scare tactic.

myg0t has never said anything anti-Valve besides "Valve can't stop us raging." We are free to enjoy the game as we want because we have PURCHASED it. There are no rules set by Valve saying I can't block my teammates in a room or kill them at the start of a round.

E-mails and news releases cannot be construed as computer intrusion unless you can prove they were taken without authorization by THAT person. You cannot question somebody just because they are part of a community (as long as said community is not a terrorist group).
