They always say that its the tigers first appearance, since their isn't any type of protection between tiger and audience it's used to put a little flare in the show. second off that tiger wasn't mauling him he was dragging him away, somebody in the audience distracted the tiger and then thought roy was in trouble so he grabbed him by the neck and dragged him away to protect him.
October 10, 200321 yr my take on it was basically roy tripped over the tiger, causing a buncha handlers to rush out and try to drag the tiger offstage. The cat got confused because he always leaves stage with roy, so he picked roy up by the neck (like housecats do with kittens) and carried him offstage. Of course, humans arent designed to have 300 pound tigers carrying them around by the neck, so things got messy.
