February 8, 200520 yr Does HALF-LIFE 2 break the law? - [Computer Games] Submitted by Forcefire on 2/7/2005 5:18:38 PM If you were one of the thousands of gamers worldwide who had a nightmare trying to get Half-Life 2 installed on your PC, or if you're still struggling to connect to Steam every time you fancy a bit of Gordon time, you've probably aimed a few choice curse words at Valve. But we bet you never thought that the developer could possibly be violating your rights as a consumer. Well, possibly. In an extremely interesting round up of the legal minefield that surrounds some Half-Life 2 issues, technology website The Inquirer attempts to cut through the red tape and offer the disgruntled HL2 gamer some advice. It seems there are three common issues causing problems. The first is a failure by Valve to mention that installing Steam to validate and run Half-Life 2 is essential. The UK packaging we had listed an internet connection as a prerequisite but neglected to explain why. This seems to be the case across Europe. Some gamers also report that the offline mode does not work for them, effectively rendering their copy of the game useless. The second is slightly more annoying for new HL2 owners - some have reported that their CD Key has been hacked before they have even purchased their copy, locking them out of the game and forcing them to wait on Valve to give them a new key. This has reportedly taken up to two weeks in some cases. Then there's the issue of not being able to give or sell your copy of the game to another gamer, without having to pay Valve a fee to fully transfer your CD Key to a new owner. It seems action is being taken against Valve by certain organisations. Apparently, the German Consumer Association has already ruled that the lack of any mention of Steam on the game's packaging is a violation of consumer rights. We couldn't delve into the murky depths of legal issues surrounding Half-Life 2 any better than The Inquirer, so if you've found yourself on the wrong end of any of these problems you should head here to get their take on the story. http://www.ircspy.com

February 9, 200520 yr Do we really need a fucking magazine article to know that steam is undoubtably the worst system set up to play games ever. When I read 'internet required' on the bottom of the HL2 box, I knew Steam would be a bitching burden, and make playing valve's games a hassle inside itself. Congrats for noticing the obvious, skippy.

February 9, 200520 yr the reason steam sucks is gabe newell use to work for microsoft, and anybody that knows anything knows that microsoft is famous for their shitty software, thats why everyone pirates it, I don't see how windows xp pro is worth 300$ when there are many linux distros offering the same features, and they cost far less or free.
February 9, 200520 yr Hey Seal, For cs source the steam engine crack type of thingy doesnt work anymore. I use to use it and couldnt get banned and didnt use cd key or nothing but now it says some error like "[TEMP] Your protocol version doesnt match the hosts." or something. If you can help please help.
February 9, 200520 yr you just don't get it do you? you don't need to go buy the game to get in and hack the shit out of HL source and all the mods. no, i dont think you get it do you? not once did i ever buy HL1/CS1.x , why because at the time i started playing i had around 2000 CD keys. How many steam accounts have I got, errr 2 and one of them is banned. So stop sucking myg0t batty. P!ngu.

Dumb fuck, theres so many ways to circumvent steam auth it's not even funny. valve fucked themselves in the ass with this shitty software, making pirating 10X easier, I myself own an actual silver account, but I use other methods for rage, LEST I BE BANNED FROM THE PLANET. do some research fool, steam has been owned since way before hl2, the circumventing measures just became more popular due to the demand of people wanting hl2, but not wanting to pay for it. the only idiots that got banned from steam, are dumb fucks who thought finding a key on a website or .nfo file will get them access. all this is far from legal ofcourse, so end of discussion
February 9, 200520 yr ahhh, ok so i am a dumb fuck. if there are so many ways to get around steam why am i paying for it? yea your right thats prob why im a dumb fuck. maybe i should spend more time on my pc and less time getting off my cake. P!ngu
