Police charged an Elkton man Saturday in his wife's death after investigators found her body on a soiled mattress surrounded by decaying food and her own excrement - a scene that one law enforcement veteran called the worst he's seen in nearly three decades on the job.

 

John Joseph Dougherty, 52, kept his wife, Mary Elizabeth Kilrain, 46, locked in the bedroom for the past six years and she weighed only 81 pounds when police found her, according to charging documents which don't become public until today.
