I'm looking at putting linux on an older computer (1.2 ghz celeron, 192 mb RAM) for learning, and I was wondering what the best types are. I just downloaded slackware, because I've heard good things about it. Also heard good stuff about redhat. Anyways, if you guys have any recommendations, let me know.

You have drank too much canadian beer to know :bash:

*Drinks a few more beers, installs windows 3.1 on his computer*

lol, i think slackware is a bit too advanced for you. start with something nubish like mandrake or redhat.
I started with Fedora Core. It's pretty easy if you're not a fucking idiot.
I think it's funny how you think he's stupid before he has said anything.

We know because he drinks canadian beer

OMG YUO SO TRICKEH!!

IS YUO THE ONE WHO MAKE ME GO TO GOATSE TOO? LOL!!

faggot.

You haven't got very good english :bash:

Its YOU not "YUO" lol

I started on Slackware and although it has a much higher learning curve it forces you to actually learn some things. Mandrake and Red Hat Fedora are good places to start for someone seeking a friendly experience.

OK thanks for the help. I think I'll have a look at Redhat to get used to the very basics, then move over to Slackware if I'm decent with Redhat. It's not that I'm uncomfortable around computers (I'm A+ Certified >.<) It's just that I've never used a linux comp before. Anyways, thanks for the advice.

Fedora Core 3. It runs great on my shitty 2ghz celeron laptop.

Fedora Core 3 is the best all round Linux distribution. I use it on my Desktop when I am not playing games, and it works great.

Fedora Core wont let you down for gaming either, providing you have the right stuff. Unreal Tornament 2004(on the Windows CD, not MAC), Wolfestien Enemy Territory(Free), and America's Army(Free) all work nativley on Linux. You can use Cedega to translate Windows only games, but you must pay $5 a month for that (still beats the Windows OEM price).

You also must have a nVidia graphics card, because nVidia is the only company that makes Linux 3D accelerated drivers. ATI dosen't belive in Linux technology.

I really hate Windows, but I am one of the few people who do something about it.

ATI has linux support. It's just, well, hard to get them installed right.

On this comp (9600 on it), I can't for the fucking life of me get the ATI drivers to work. I've heard some people HAVE gotten them to work, and it works just fine.

It's pretty funny being an asshole. Wonder how you don't know because you're bigger asshole than me...

And that first that you quoted wasn't being an asshole, me and housemaster had a little beerfight...

ATI has generic Linux drivers, unsupported. They cannot run 3D applications with full acceleration, making 3D impossible or very, very slow.
