March 5, 200520 yr Guys...hate to tell you this, but that's a shock vid, and NOT common practice for anyone who collects furs from animals for a living. There is no way in hell anyone will trap, or raise an animal for fur, and NOT make an effort to kill it before beginning the skinning, because there's no way to be certain, if you just try to stun/daze/knock it out that it will STAY kayoed while you're making the skinning cuts, much less when you're ripping the skin off the body...even with the limbs removed, a 45 pound raccoon (a small one, by US wildlife standards, if it's adult) is one HELL of a danger to anyone trying to handle it...an uninjured adult raccoon will usually kill a full grown german shepherd if they tangle in a campground or park, and an injured one is most often MORE dangerous...they're easily capable of completely ruining a man's hand for life with one bite, even if you're wearing kevlar link gloves, such as animal control officers use (which is why even animal control officers are cautious when handling a wild raccoon). I admit that factory farming or skinning (nor working an abbatoire or slaugtherhouse) are not "nice" jobs...I'll even say that here in the states, they're unnesiccarily cruel...but I'll tell you that NOWHERE in the world is there anyone who's trying to make a living as a fur trader/trapper where the guy doing it doesn't want to continue to make a living...therefore, they TRY to kill the animal before skinning, every time...they might fail, sometimes, and end up only knocking it out or stunning it (even in US mink farms, the electric shock stick doesn't always manage to fatally zap the critter), but they aren't DELIBERATELY just knocking it silly long enough to chop the limbs off, make a couple fast cuts, and yank the skin off...it's too damned chancy. Any of you who've been bitten by a damned hampster can empathize withh how hard it would be to keep up a working pace at somethign that requires the dexterity of chain-skinning, if you took chances that would guarentee that your fingers and hands would be covered with multiple bites from pain-maddened fur animals day after day, which is what would happen if you only tried to stun the critters before skinning (since, if you fucked up stunning them, you'd just have a MORE pissed off animal in your hands, as opposed to trying to kill the lil fucker, and fucking it up, and ending up with just a stiunned one in your hands). While I'd not be one to take such a job as skinning for the fur trade, and I DETEST trophy hunters, I'm not hypocrite enough to bitch at those who DO take such jobs...I buy the leather products, meats, and such that make a market for such trades, therefore, I'm as much at fault as the actual knockers and knackers in the slaughterhouses. I'll further say that I DO do my part in trying to keep it as humane as possible by limiting what I purchase through hunting, fishing, and raising my own, as much as possible, and when I can't, I try to buy from sources I know to be above the standards in "humane slaughter" standards.
