true true, mate...my kids are 7, 8, and 9, now...the youngest is already the one who helps his teacher whenever there's a problem with the classroom computers, the 9 year old already has his personal webpage (all done in HTML) on the school's site, done by himself (ok...he hijacked a couple of my reference books to do it, but he did the page instead of doing any book reports this school year...lol...smart kid), and he's already built two machines for the kids out of my "spare parts" bins, only having me setup the case-to-mobo connections for him (the rest is plug-n-play and OS installation...no real challenge to an adult, but impressive in a 9 year old).

My daughter (the middle one) isn't into computers any further than it takes to play her sims, and to use her digital camera and a couple art programs for editing pictures...but she's more heavily into the wildlife stuff I'm into..her brothers like camping and fishing and such just fine, but SHE'S the one who likes to learn about animal tracks and habits, and the likes...says she's going to be a evterinarian when she grows up (which I doubt...kids are like that...but still, if she likes it enough to learn more about local fauna than most adults ever learn, I'm happy)

I'm not too worried about outsourcing of skilled trades, as some things CAN'T be outsourced effectively (base construction relies on skilled labor in the local pool), and, for the rest...as long as you have access to the results of skilled labor, no problem...service based economies are just fine.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone taught to read well, with a high level of comprehension, who also learns how to use inductive and deductive reasoning, and is firmly grounded in math, at LEAST to the calculus level, will never be "hurtin" for ANYTHING for long...there are some skills to be aquiried, of course...but, if necessary, you can learn to do ANYTHING that needs to be done, with the right stresses on education (which aren't the ones society, or the educational system, puts on them...but parents can fix that...or a self-motivated kid with the right advice).

I couldn't agree more.

and

I sell crack...... to niggers

please dont try to shit on a good thread.

Hatter...what's funny is the only people I've ever met who DIDN'T agree were people you couldn't trust to do ANYTHING correctly, with written, step by step instructions, if it was outside of the areas they were (or had been) professionally trained in (unless it closely resembled a skill needed for one of their hobbies).

I mean, I can't count the number of Sociology and Lit professors (or grad students), and the like I've met who couldn't learn to replace a carborator, with a Chilton's right in front of them...and they were invariably PROUD of it.

THAT shit is what scares me about this society....

It used to be that an education was respected AS an education, but noone in their right mind gave a shit HOW educated you were if you couldn't take care of the shit that had to be done around your own house...even if you CHOSE to hire someone else to do it for you.

There are times I honestly believe this race (humanity) as a whole would be better off if we DID do something stupid and kill off half to three quarters of the population in one shot....by the time the secondary deaths (of people who couldn't handle shit themselves) were over, we'd be down to 70 million or so (instead of 7 billion), and enough of the INFORMATION would survive to make the climb back up to modern technology pretty quick.

I'm a full time electrician and a full time student where I’m studying the medical field.

haha reminds me of something im researching. from what i've learned that future is not far off.

just do this, look up the amount of Microbiologists killed since 9/11. also look at how many of them had to do with extensive aids research.

70 million here we come.

I'm an Aviation Flight Operations major at a D-II school. I make burritos at Qdoba Grille for 7.80 an hour. Go me.
i work for AT&T phone company, i work 8 hours, i work all 7 days, make $20 per hour.
The funny thing is people pay out of their asses for degrees and diplomas which really arn't even worth the price. Specially Devry graduates who get covered in debt to their necks and work 10 jobs in pizza delivery and janitors.

Owner of my own Construction company in New England. Currently employing 12 full time and 3 part timers during the winter slow months.

Screw college and go into a trade (be it electician. plumber or carpenter)

It's unbelievable the shortage of skilled labor in the U.S. . Mexicans and other immigrants are filling in the trades and are making a mess of things .

I pay my top carpenters $38.00 phr and apprentices starting at $13.00.

fucking dirty immigrants. you know china use to be slaves for the usa, hehe.

like jedi said it depends on where you want to go in the work force, that's probably true for 90% of people, but that 90% will still get jobs paying more than people without ANY college experience simply because employers often hire whoever has the most college, no matter what the degree you got was for (if you even got one). you will learn this if you haven't already, its usually jobs that pay under $30/hour though.

medical school is/was expensive as fuck, it was $16k~ a year to get my associates and by the time you get up to your masters, if you chose to, as with most health/science degrees, your tuition will have doubled if not tripled. i only paid by the quarter because i knew from the start i might not want to stick to radiology, but im rich and wasn't in any debt over it.

i've been self employed since i was a minor and have always made decent money doing all kinds of odd jobs, the main reason i wanted to go to college was mostly for the experience, because as far as im concerned college defiantly changes anyone's view on life and expands your way of thinking no matter what you're there to major in or how old you are.

if i stick to me decision to switch to real estate ill probably just go to the local CC, i don't think most universities offer it anyways, its just not needed. it is a cut-throat business like PsychoBud said but i know some friends who do it from both ends (commercial and residential). in my city there's a lot of new commerce and the city is growing at a pretty fast rate, and since it wouldn't be my primary income, i would be able to survive during off-peak seasons. the commission you get is usually around 6% average i believe, and for pretty much any commercial property, that's a fucking huge cut.

heck, yet another guy that's wasted his time studying, and is off to be a salesman. Join the crew mate, at least with a degree, you have good cred. there's too many people out there that want to earn money, but don't have the 'nounce. It takes brains to earn the dough, and you'll only do that in sales.....unless you want to be a fully qualified practitioner, and work your butt off for approx the same pay.

Meh, I'm a Sergeant in the US Army. Probably going to be a lifer. I'm in the Signal Corps with a good clearance, so I can walk into a job with a telecommunications company, cable/satellite television company...any company that uses long distance wireless communication protocals of pretty much any sort anywhere from vhf to uhf. Those jobs usually pay anywhere from $60k - $80k a year...even better if I can be an independant contractor for multiple companies.

I specialize in FM communications/antenna theory omni-directional and line-of-site.

Yup, that it is, SX...REALLY good money, once you've got a client base...I know of a chick I went to HS with that everyone figured was the one who'd go to college to catch a husband, if at all...you know the type...too ditzy to even make a decent cheerleader, but hell of a looker, type? ANyhow, she managed to turn this ditzy scatterbrained impression (she wasn't REALLY as ditzy as she came across..noone COULD be, and be able to walk two steps in high heels) she left with people, and the looks into one HELL of a going client base in real estate...made the millionaire's club (a group for real estate agents in residential real estate who've made more than 1 million in commissions, total) before she was 27.

Pissed me off, because at our 10 year reunion, she admitted to having wanted to date me in HS, but by then, she was married to this skinny little geekoid CPA (and STILL fine as fuck).
