I work in a data centre, collecting & archiving data from all kinds of things; it's a good easy job that pays well - nothing too hard about it. I got the job over several people who had computer science degrees seeing as the company I work for understands that just because you've got that certificate doesn’t mean you can do the job better than someone who doesn’t - very glad I did not go to university as that was the course I would have been doing right this very day, only to get in to a job that I currently do.

Other than that; I previously fitted roller doors as a contractor on weekdays and worked as security in clubs/pubs on weekends. It paid lots of money working the two jobs but it was very rare that I had a chance to do anything outside of work.

When I did some travelling I worked in various clubs/pubs behind the bar - best years of my life. If you are young and wanting to get out there and do something I highly recommend you get some cash together and buy a plane ticket to wherever it is you want to go and see the world. There are plenty of jobs you can pick up on your way, not to mention the good looking locals ;)

i have a part time job at a call center (i get to rage people by phoneing them early during weekends and i get paid for it)

I get to 'phone people about cheap holidays, and man, do they get raged. I can sit on my telephone for hours, and can talk about cheap shit. One guy said to me the other day that I should shove my telephone up my ass, so I asked him had he had buttsex with a nigger? At my call-center, he can't return the call, so you can say what you want.
Frosh at UW-Madison. No major yet. DJ on the side for cash at a local club/houseparties.
PsychoBud, just wanted to let you know I appreciate that post. It was intelligent and well thought out, and exactly what I was hoping to hear when SX said you knew more about that stuff. I do want to work on chipset design and stuff, and your point of view is good to take into consideration. A bit of a thread hijacking question, but how good is PHP for web design. I'm looking at starting up a website with forums in summer, and I've been told that PHP combined with mySQL is the best for a site along those lines. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions on that, I'd like to hear them.

I find ASP to be better than php. Plus I despise php. Most of the php community I met is full of n00b dipshits who always claim that php is superior to all other languages and what not.

True enough, FT, but he's not looking to get into proferssional web design, and ASP atkes some time to get competent with.

PHP is ideal for the hobby tinkerer, as in XHTML and HTML, instead of going to the trouble of learning all the dynamic markup languages.

huh? certifications?

those are for people without any computer background.

use vbscript? ( why? ) use javascript/jscript.

php sux0rs - but I like it :P - dunno - maybe perl is just too snooty for me ( lol? is that why all of my server scripts are done in perl? )

maybe the torture of parsing my own content just gets me hard or something

My suggestion - if you're starting from scratch ->

LEARN PERL 1st

Pick up PHP over a weekend later on and see how friendly it is.

You want to go far :

Perl, PHP, Java, JSP, SQL, HTTP, Solaris/Linux

You want to be indispensible :

JAVA:Threads, JAVA:Struts , EJB, J2EE, work some IDEs like Netbeans/Eclipse - pump out programs in hours, not days.

Take on the hard stuff first. HTML/XHTML/CSS is a joke.

The script languages ( JavaScript/JScript ) are crap once you've got something like Java under your belt.

If you've got a CS degree - lol - don't even *bother* with getting certifications. Waste of your money & redundant.

People I know -

They don't give a shit if you have a paper or not. They care what you do. Rule of thumb - the best thing to persue is someone on the inside of somewhere good - they know what you're capable of - they just need to throw in a good word and screw everyone else :P you're in.

Oooh - tell me otherwise. You're talking out of your ass if you do.

It's the way things work. Why? I run them - I've worked them - I've seen it in action. @ my place - I'm the ass you need to kiss :P

lololol

better yet - don't even bother with the IT field. It's so flooded it's funny.

( luckily ... :P about 50% of the people out there are total shit. so I don't give a fuck. )

--------

ASP is if you want your server hax0red.

I do *nix only. I would never even *consider* a win server, or any MS technology.

And btw - what the hell are you talking about ASP take a long time to learn?

VB is cheeze. It's so fucking lame it's pathetic.

I picked it up because I *THOUGHT* I might be able to get things deployed faster than java.

Know what I came to?

The string handling blew fat goat ass - and I didn't give a fuck how easy that shit was - the program size sucked, the program quality sucked, and it all around was a fucking kike overpriced shit platform that I will never think about touching again.

btw.

VB's another weekend language for me- like PHP.

[edit :P ]

don't need to tell me I'm a fucking asshole because I'll tell you that myself.

I take pride in being a fucking asshole.
