Posted May 27, 200519 yr why is it that all the latest desktops made for gaming (yes i know most of you fools act like everyone knows how to make your own computer, but you really don't and you only pose) have pci express graphic cards? i thought agp was better? i was looking at alienware lhx, their top model and it has a pci card. Is pci better than agp??? or are they the same or what? I always thought pci sucked. I'd like to know before i buy my new computer.

May 27, 200519 yr pci-x16 has MORE than enough bandwidth for any graphics card out on the market now, but so does AGP. right now, it doesn't matter what kind of card you buy, but the PCI-X's are slowly pushing out AGP cards, so in the long run it would be better to get a mobo with a PCI-X16 graphics card slot.

PCI-E was developed to reflect the fact that not only are graphics more demanding, but many peripherals are these days, so they needed a new format to enable further improvement, as AGP format was pretty much "topped out" in abilities for the technology available...they needed somethign that could get the information to and from the "core system" faster and easier than the AGP interface allowed. At this point, if you're building a new system, aiming it at gaming, you're best off going with a 64 bit system with PCI-E graphics card, and one that has both IDE and SATA interfaces support for the disk drives, as SATA is inherently faster, but still a bit more expensive. According to the trades, in the next few years, SATA will be becoming cheap enough that most HDDs, and ROMS will be offered in SATA format at competative prices...this will spell the end of IDE interface HDDs and ROMS, since the SATA passes information to the MOBO, and hence, to the proc, quite a bit faster. The fact that there are no "viable" 64 bit apps out there yet is irrelevant, as we know that they're coming out in the relatively near future...build for upward compatibility, so you don't have to ground up a new system when the stuff that can use the technology becomes common. PCI-E is fast enough that the best (and most expensive) PCI-E graphics cards out there aren't even touching on the dataflow capabilities of the format...they switched formats to something that is "upwardly compatable" with any advances in the abilities of graphics cards that they've been able to forsee...I'd guess, looking back historically, that this means PCI-E will be insufficient for dataflow needs in another 5-7 years, at which point, they'll develop a new format...but by that time, the graphics cards will have the RAM and processing capabiities we expect in a good laptop comuter right now, all by themselves, because that's the kind of dataflow PCI-E is designed to handle as a max.
