it workED, there are several differnet variations of this exploit.

 

this is for admin mod, very old version. it is fixed by now. the only way to get the exploit to work is very painstaking. ive only gotten it to work once.

 

what u do is have an admin on the server, his admin access must be by name. not wonid or ip. then once there is an admin playing the server, and he has access by name. it then goes into the file ta01.1 or some file that apears on the drive that hl is on. it then rips the file because it is in use and is protected, it is the cache for all packets the server sends in/out to you (including the packet that checks your name and if u have password correct). then opens the file and you look for the trigger for the password to his name, by default its like _pw "password"

 

after that all you have to do is change ur name to the admins and do setinfo _pw "password"

 

and again, this does not work any more. and it will be hard for you to find a server with over a year old adminmod. have fun.

there are more difficult methods of doing the same thing that still work...they just require you actually know something about computers to do it :)

 

I'd thought it was a way to actually crack the admin.cfg of the server...which would allow you to remotely change that file on the gameserver....THAT would have been a handy cracker to have, you know?

300...what ahhchuu was saying is this works still only on outdated versions of adminmod...

 

you can do the smae thing IF you have a debugging utility, or rig a method of doing running backups of hard drive--Fluke Protocol Inspector will also capture all packets coming to your computer in hex, if you find a copy, which will make it quite possible to log and copy the logfile a gameserver sends to your machine...but you have to learn to translate hex to ASCII, and to identify which packet set is the logfile, for this to work (or get or design a utility to do it for you)...

 

the major issue these days is MOST passwords outside rcon are associated with WON or Steam ID now...and lots of times they are encrypted...personally, I've learned to rely on using HLSW and Fluke to try and find simple encrypted passwords or unencrypted ones...since RCON is all I'm really interested in, anyhow (since most servers use a "real word" for an rcon password, so admin can remember it easily, it's usually pretty easy to do a modified bruteforce to uncover siple encryption, or to reverse-encrypt it using my own copy of adminmod or amx mod encryption algorythim, after some reverse engineering...people smart and paranoid enough to use third party, or multiple encryption schemes are few and far between)
