ohzero...not all states require a firearms liscense....I've never lived in a state that required a liscense to own, and have lived in a couple where open carry doesn't even require a liscense (AZ, NM, and TX, for instance, allow anyone over 21, who passes the background check duing the 5 day wait, to own and carry any firearm they legally purchase in the open, with minor limitations)

 

 

as far as what's-his-name's claim he can pick off just about any target he wishes at 300 yards with an AR-15...BULLSHIT...AR-15 is a substandard copy of the M-16A2 in semi...the marines consider you "expert", and will offer you sniper training (one of the hardest USMC schools) if you can hit 4 of 4 3 second pop up STATIONARY half-sihouettes at 300 yards with a 16, and the Army feels the same way about anyone who can hit 3 of three that pop up during their 40 target BRM qualification...

 

At 300 yards, an offest of 1 millimeter at the end of your barrel is an offset of a yard at target...and THAT is if you're shooting indoors, or under "zero windage" conditions. It's possible to reliably and consistantly hit a stationary man sized target at 300 yards in calm conditions with an AR-15 or mini 14 with the "assault kit", but it's less than 1 out of every thousand shooters who can reliably hit a moving target at that range with that gun in varied conditions...and most of those who can are competative shooters...if you'd claimed you could pick of targets at 300 yards reliably with a remmy 7600 or anything else with an "extended maximum range" exceeding 400 yards total for point targets, I'd maybe have bought it.

Only reason I know guns for shit beyond usage is I do the minor smithing for my wife, who's a national level competative shooter (yes, the bitch outshoots me...what's your point? I can still fill my tickets every hunting season, so I'm satisfied)

 

Honestly, it's hard NOT to know alot of "useless trivia" about firearms after 4 years in the army infantry, two of which I spent in the 3/75. Especially when at one point, my job within the unit, during "barracks time" was as "assistant armorer" (helped the wepons specialist keep up on paperwork and parts orders, mostly, admitted), and even harder to avoid learning something when you're married to a woman who shoots competatively 9 months out of the year, and has three major manufacturers constantly sending her pieces to "evaluate"...I'd have learned SOMETHING just running guns to her gunsmith and picking them back up, even if I'd tried to avoid it :)

 

 

Personally, though, I'm just happy to be able to reliably hit what I aim at during hunting season :)

Hunting animals sucks.

I figure it's kinder than what a cow, pig, or chicken goes through to end up prepackaged in the grocery...and it usually tastes better, and is ALWAYS cheaper...I get 2" thick porterhouse cuts of venison or moose steak for what amounts to about a cent a pound, due to hunting, after all...and a GOOD prime rib cut off an elk might run me 4 or 5 cents a pound, when the same cut of beef at butcher shop is close to $18 a pound for the same quality meat...plus, since the animals actually have to work to stay alive, the meat's "richer", and as long as you know what they feed off in the area you hunt, you can be sure it has a better flavor...like up here in the cascades, deer and elk live off ferns and mosses, and what they can raid from pastureland and feed bins...so in essence, I'm really getting red meat fed off the same shit local cattle are, but that did alot more work, trimming down the amount of fat I get :)

(you'd be suprised at what you can get away with perfectly legally, if you "arrange circumstances" correctly....for instance, if you can piss someone off enough to make them threaten to use a weapon on you in front of witnesses, you can make a good case for being "in fear of your life and safety", in which case it's perfectly legal to hit the person you claim to have been afraid of with a collapsable metal pipe (an "Asp" defense baton) multiple times in the head and body...at least until you couldn't possibly be afraid of their ability to constitute a danger anymore..no arrest for me, AND the asshole who I did it to is the one who ended up convicted of assault, despite the fact HE took the beating <grin>)

arsenic...I've already done it...several times...the only time I got in ANY legal trouble as a result, they had to downgrade from "attempted manslaughter" to "assault in the 2nd"...and even then, I only got convicted of harrassment in the end,for goading him into attacking...ain't the legal system WONDERFUL?
