SO I decided to dl BF2 and install. When I tried to open the game it went to a black screen and then back to my desktop. I'm pretty sure that this was because of my low end pc and the fact that BF2 doesn't support GeForce4 cards , I just wanted to start the game up and look at the main menu to see if it worked. Anyway , I have more RAM and a new videocard arriving soon , specs below

Now:

P4 2.0 Ghz CPU (2.3 Ghz max speed)

GeForce 4 Ti4200 (64 MB RAM)

265 MB RAM system memory

Two hard drives of 30 gb , and an external one of 200 gb (not of the issue)

After upgrade this weekend:

P4 2.0 Ghz CPU

GeForce FX 5800 (128mb RAM , not sure if its the ultra version)

1 Gigabyte RAM system memory

What graphic settings do you guys reccomend ?

Does the crash occur after the hardware upgrades? Because I was having trouble with the menu with my Radeon 9250 gfx card ( not-supported ). Then I decided to swap out to my dad's FX 5200 ( not-supported also ) surprisingly, it worked.

I would recommend upping the CPU a bit. Preferably a high end Athlon-64 or Pentium 4 with a clock speed above 3.0ghz.

The graphics card you currently own should be able to run the game fine on low settings, don't expect anything else out of that though.

Dude, there is no need to get a new video card, i have a 9250 and had the same problem but i fixed it, go to your display properties, then advanced, then go to SMARTGART options, set the AGP speed from 8x to 4x. Problem solved after restart. :)
it doesnt suport geforce4 cards. you can make it, but involves making the game look like shit. it also hacks something about dx9.
